Hockey Team announces 07-08 Tryouts

8/31/07 -The UMD Wolves will be holding open tryouts for the 2007-2008 Hockey team Wednesday, September 5th through Friday, September 7th from 9:30 am - 11:00 am. All tryout sessions will take place in the Fieldhouse. Any questions regarding tryouts can be directed to Bryan Earl - earlb@umich.edu

7/10/07 -The Wolves Hockey Team will begin its summer skating on Wednesday July 18th from 8:30pm-10:30pm. Anyone interested in trying out for the Wolves this season is encouraged to come. The cost is $10 per skate. The summer skating schedule will run on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 8:30pm-10:30pm for the rest of July and the first few weeks of August. Either Head Coach Dave Debol or Assistant Coach Derek Langlois will be present at each skate. For further information please call 313-593-5671.

4/20/07 - Two UM-D players had the honor of being named to the 2006-2007 American Central Hockey Association Division-I All-American Teams. Senior forward Steve Rademacher was placed on the first team and junior defenseman Matt Chromy was named to the third team (more)...

3/10/07 - Two Wolves hockey players were named to the All-Tournament Team at Nationals as Honorable Mentions. They were Juniors Matt Chromy and Mike Ross. Chromy had 2 assists in the tournament and was on the ice for each goal the Wolves scored in the tournament. Ross scored the overtime winner in the first round upset of Ohio University.

3/1/07 - A depleted Wolves hockey team lost in the quarterfinals of the ACHA National Tournament to Oakland University 5-1. The Wolves were hit with food poisoning affecting nearly every player and coach. The Wolves fell behind early 2-0 and despite grinding it out until the end, came up short. The Wolves only goal was scored by Junior Jason Vella with assists going to Joel Kuehn and Matt Chromy in the third period making th ecore 3-1, but Oaklnd scored two more times to win. With the loss the Wolves finished the season ranked #8 in the country.

2/28/07 - The #15 ranked Wolves pulled off one of the biggest upsets in ACHA National Tournament history defeating the # 2 ranked Ohio Bobcats 3-2 in overtime in the first round of the National Torunament. Junior Mike Ross scored the game winning goal with 1 minute 49 seconds remaining in overtime. Ross got the rebound off a Matt Chromy shot and put the puck in the back of the net for the victory. The 15th ranked Wolves trailed 1-0 early in the game, then Senior Joel Kuehn tied the game with 9 minutes remaining in the first period. Senior Steve Rademacher scored the only goal of the second period with assists going to linemates Kuehn and Freshman Shawn Wilson. The Bobcats tied the game in third period with Shawn Warriner scoring with 1 minute 29 seconds remaining in the game.

 

2/14/07 - Awards for the Central States Collegiate Hockey League were announced today and several of our Wolves were honored. Forward Shawn Wilson was named Rookie-of-the-Year and to the All-Rookie Team. Junior Matt Chromy and senior Joel Kuehn were also named to the 2nd Team while Senior Steve Rademacher was named to the All-League 1st Team. Four players also excelled academically this season, Rademacher, Chromy, goalie Stephen Yu and forward Michael Pangrazzi made the All-Academic Team. Congratulations to all of the men on qualifing for Nationals yet again!


2/14/07 - Today the UM-D men made history by becoming one of only three teams to qualify for ACHA Nationals every year since the Association was formed 16 years ago. The currently ranked #1 Penn State team as well as the #6 Iowa State Cyclones join them in this achievement. Read more on this story by clicking here.

2/3/07 - The #16 UM-D Wolves split this past weekend against #18 Eastern Michigan, losing Friday night 3-2 and winning 4-3 on Saturday. The win clinches the team's trip to the CSCHL playoffs on February 16-18 in Youngstown, Ohio. For more standings, click here.

1/13/07 - The #14 Wolves hockey team split this past weekend against #9 Kent State.  Saturday night the Wolves squandered a 3-1 lead in route to a 14-6 defeat.  The Wolves scored three first period power play goals from Freshman Shawn Wilson, Sophomore Steve Nelson, and Junior Michael Crowley.  Kent State scored four goals in the final four minutes of the first period to take a 5-3 lead.  Then the Golden Flashes scored four more goals in the first four and a half minutes of the second period to easily take the victory.

Friday night had the Wolves offense clicking.  Seniors Josh Thompson and Steve Rademacher along with Shawn Wilson got the Wolves off to a 3-0 lead.  Kent State then answered scoring two goals in the final minute of the first period.  Kent then tied the game up early in the second period, then the teams traded goals with Rademacher and Wilson scoring for the Wolves.  With the game tied at five in the third period, the Wolves scored five goals for the 10-5 victory.  Rademacher had one goal to complete his trick and Wilson had two as he completed a four goal game.  Freshman Matthew Janiga got his second win of the season in only his second start.

The Wolves next travel to Missouri to take the #7 Lindenwood Lions on Friday and Saturday.

1/6/07 - The 14th ranked Wolves hockey team swept 18th ranked Robert Morris College over the weekend. Saturday night's game proved to be one for the ages. The Wolves jumped out to a 3-1 lead late in the second period when Robert Morris scored 4 short handed goals and one power play goal to take a 6-3 lead into the third period. The Wolves got a goal from Senior Steve Rademacher to pull within 2 goals, but less than a minute later the Eagles scored to take a 7-4 lead. Then the Wolves came alive. With just over 8 minutes remaining in the game Junior Defenseman Matt Chromy scored his second power play goal of the game. 18 seconds later Rademacher scored his second goal of the game and the momentum was on the Wolves side. With 6:45 left in the game Junior Michael Crowley scored a short handed goal to tie the game. The with 3:23 left, in just his second game with the Wolves, Sophomore Defenseman Steve Nelson scored as the Wolves took an 8-7 lead. Then Rademacher completed the scoring by adding an empty net goal completing his second hat trick of the weekend. Senior Forward Joel Kuehn recorded 8 assists and Junior Goaltender Stephen Yu got the win.

On Friday night, Senior Steve Rademacher had a hat trick as the Wolves won 6-3. Rademacher scored 18 seconds into the game to set the pace for the Wolves early, but found themselves trailing 3-2 in the second period before Rademacher got his third goal of the game and then Sophomore Steve Galvan scored the game winner with just over 6 minutes remaining in the third period. Junior Matt Chromy and Senior Josh Thompson each scored in the third period. Freshman goaltender Matt Janiga made 38 saves in his first career collegiate start. Freshman Shawn Wilson had three assists.

For the weekend, Rademacher had 6 goals and 1 assist, Kuehn had 9 assists, and Chromy had 3 goals and 4 assists. The Wolves will host # 9 Kent State University on Friday and Saturday.

11/27/06 - The 8th ranked Wolves spent their Thanksgiving Weekend winning 2 of 3 games in the annual UMD Holiday Classic Tournament.  On Friday night, the Wolves got 2 goals from freshman James Donovan in route to a 6-3 win over Indiana University of Pennsylvania.  Donovan got the scoring underway in the first period just 7 minutes into the game.  After IUP answered, freshmen Andrew Baron and Shawn Wilson each scored in the second period, while senior Josh Thompson scored late in the second as the Wolves took a 4-1 lead into the third period.  The Wolves would add two power play goals in the third period, one by Donovan and the final goal of the game by senior Joel Kuehn.  Junior goaltender Stephen Yu made 33 saves as the Wolves killed off 5 of 6 IUP power plays.

Saturday night did not go as well for UMD.  The Wolves fell to 16th ranked West Virginia 4-3.  West Virginia opened the scoring with a power play goal.  The Wolves quickly responded with a goal of their own by forward Shawn Wilson just 15 seconds after West
Virginia's goal.  Then senior Michael Crowley scored a minute and a half later as the Wolves lead 2-1 after the first period.  West Virginia scored the only goal of the second period again on the power play.  The Wolves then fell behind in the third 3-2, but Josh
Thompson scored his second goal of the weekend to tie the score at 3.  But West Virginia scored late in the third period and managed to kill off a Wolves power play late the game to take the victory.

The Wolves ended the tournament by defeating Oakland University 7-4 on Sunday afternoon.  The Wolves took the early lead with a goal from junior defenseman Jason Vella, but the
Grizzlies came back with 2 power play goals.  UMD answered scoring 2 more times in the first period as Crowley and senior Steve Rademacher each tallied a goal.  Oakland would scored its third power play goal of the game the second period as the teams were tied 3-3 going into the third period.  The Wolves then took control of the game.  Sophomore Steve Galvan scored then Donovan scored 2 goals in 22 seconds as the Wolves lead 6-3.  The 11th ranked Grizzlies were not done though as John Parrish scored to close the gap to 2 goals. The Wolves iced the game as Kuehn scored the final goal of the game on the power play to win 7-4.  Josh Thompson and junior defenseman Matt Chromy each had 3 assists as the
Wolves scored 3 power play goals.

The Wolves will travel to Champaign to take on top-ranked Illinois Friday and Saturday December 1 and 2

11/06/07 - The sixth ranked Wolves split the weekend series against the sixteenth ranked Stallions of Western Michigan.  On Friday, UMD scored 3 times in the second period in route to a 7-5 victory.  Junior defenseman Matt Chromy got the Wolves first goal in the first period to tie the score at 1.  Western answered only 2 minutes later to take a 2-1 lead into the second period.  

The Wolves controlled the second period with goals from sophomore Steve Galvan, senior Josh Thompson, and freshman James Donovan. In the third period the teams traded goals with each team getting 3. sSeniors Joel Kuehn and Steve Rademacher along with freshman Shawn Wilson all scored for the Wolves.  Junior golatender Stephen Yu made 33 saves in the victory.

On Saturday, the Wolves were poised to sweep the Broncos, but a late surge by the Stallions gave them the 5-2 victory.  The Wolves scored twice in the first period with Wilson scoring both goals. Western scored its first goal of the five minutes into the third period. Then the Stallions scored 4 goals with less than 3 minutes remaining in the game.  The loss drops the Wolves record to 8-7.  UMD has the upcoming weekend off before hosting St. Louis on November 17-18.

Wolves sending two players to WGU -
Senior Captain Joel Kuehn and junior goalie Stephen Yu were named to Team USA and will head off to Torino, Italy in January to participate in the World University Games.

This is second time Kuehn will be participating in the games.    Head Coach Dave Debol will be one of the assistant coaches for Team USA. The World University Games are an international competition in a variety of sports for college athletes across the world.  The games take place every other year.  The Team USA Hockey Team is comprised of ACHA players who competed for spots on the team in a tryout in August.  In 2005, Team USA had its most success ever in the games going 3-3.

10/23/06 - The Michigan-Dearborn Hockey Team went 3-0 at the Fourth Annual ACHA Showcase in Youngstown, Ohio.  The sixth ranked Wolves started the tournament off by knocking off 14th ranked Weber State 5-2.  The Wolves had a 2-1 lead after the first period thanks to goals by junior defenseman Matt Chromy and senior forward Steve Rademacher.  The two teams exchanged goals in the second period with UMD sophomore defenseman Brian Hopper scoring the Wolves lone goal of the period. The third period belonged to Michigan-Dearborn as Rademacher netted his second goal of the game and senior Josh Thompson also scored for the Wolves.  Junior goaltender Stephen Yu stopped 32 of 34 Weber State shots.

On Saturday the Wolves defeated the University of Scranton 11-5. Josh Thompson and Joel Kuehn led the charge for the Wolves each scoring a hat trick.  Steve Galvan and Matt Chromy each had five assists as the Wolves offense came alive.  Freshman forward Kevin Thompson scored his first career collegiate goal in the third period. Sophomore goaltender Nick Hill stopped 42 of 48 shots.

The Wolves offense continued to roll on Sunday as UMD defeated North Dakota State University 14-6.  Steve Rademacher continued his hot streak scoring his third hat trick of the season.  Junior forward Michael Crowley also had a hat trick as the Wolves scored 30 goals over the weekend.  For the weekend, Chromy and Rademacher led the Wolves with nine points each and Kuehn and freshman Shawn Wilson each had eight points.  The Wolves improved their record to 7-4 and are riding a five-game winning streak into Buffalo on Friday night.

10/16/06 - The #8 ranked Wolves hockey team swept the #5 ranked Iowa State Cyclones over the weekend.  On Saturday night the Wolves needed a shootout to get the win.  The Wolves trailed 2-0 after the first period, but that would be all the scoring for Iowa State as the Wolves defense and golatending killed off all 7 Cyclone power plays.  Forward Josh Thompson scored the Wolves first goal early in the second period.

Midway through the third period Senior Joel Kuehn tied the game at 2. The game remained tied throughout regulation and overtime.  In the shootout, Iowa State scored first, but Sophomore forward Steve Galvan responded with a goal of his own.  Junior goaltender Stephen Yu then stopped Iowa State's next two shooters and Wolves won as Junior Matt Chromy and Senior Steve Radmacher eached scored in the shootout.

On Friday night, the Wolves jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with goals coming from freshmen Shawn Wilson and Andrew Baron.  Iowa State stormed back to tie the game, but Rademacher scored the first of his two goals to reclaim the lead.  Kuehn starting the scoring in the third period for the Wolves, but Iowa State took a 5-4 lead.  The Wolves would then score 3 unanswered goals as Galvan, Rademacher, and Chromy all scored to finish off the Cyclones by a score of 7-5.  For the weekend Rademacher and Kuehn led the way with 2 goals and 2 assists.

10/2/06 - The Wolves hockey team got to .500 on the year defeating Grand Valley State 9-6 on Friday and Niagara University 9-6 on Saturday. Senior forward Steve Rademacher notched a hat trick in each game. On Friday Rademacher also had 2 assists as the Wolves never trailed against Lakers. Rademacher started and finished the scoring netting his first goal of the game just 1:54 into the contest. Rademacher’s last goal was with 22 seconds remaining in the game. Senior Joel Kuehn scored twice and Josh Thompson, Shawn Wilson, Walter Stepanenko, and Kahlin Dawson also scored for the Wolves. The goals for Wilson, Stepanenko, and Dawson were their first career collegiate goals.

On Saturday the Wolves kept scoring. In addition to Rademacher’s hat trick, Mike Ross, Marino Santi, Adam Stoner, Jason Vella, Michael Crowley, and Andrew Baron all scored as the Wolves scored four goals in the first and third period. It was the first collegiate goal for freshman Andrew Baron. Defenseman Matt Chromy and forward Shawn Wilson each had 3 assists. For the weekend, Rademacher had 6 goals and 2 assists, while Wilson had 1 goal and 5 assists. The Wolves travel to Athens, OH to take on Ohio University this weekend.


3/08/06 - The men's hockey team's season has concluded. The Wolves defeated Arizona State 4-3 this past Thursday - Adam Stoner led the way with 2 goals, Steve Rademacher and Patrick Coldren scored the other Wolves' goals. The team advanced to play Rhode Island the following day. The men lost to Rhode Island 1-2 in Double Overtime.  Junior Steve Rademacher scored midway through the third period to tie the score 1-1.

*Congratulations to Matt Chromy for being selected first team All-CSCHL, All-American and being selected to all defensive team.  Chromy led all defensivemen in the nation with 53 points. Chromy is the first UM-D hockey player to be selected as a first team All-American. Also, congratulations to Brian Hopper for being selected on the-Rookie Team.  Congratulations to Steve Rademacher, Stephen Yu, and Patrick Coldren for being on the All-Academic Team.
