April 5th, 2008 :: Michigan State University |
Detroit, MI - Michigan - Dearborn would open up the Ruck City Tournament with the toughest draw of the pool, Michigan State University and a 9:00 AM start wouldn't help either. Even though it was a tough test, it would be a great time to see where the Wolves Rugby team was stacking up compared to one of the better teams in the State of Michigan. UMD would come out firing and play with their trademark defensive mentality. The Spartans would make a push early in the game, trying to take advantage of the Wolves quickly, but the defense would only get tighter as the Spartans drove the field right up to the try zone where they would be succesfully turned back. Michigan - Dearborn would take ahold of the game late in the first half but were unable to do anything with the ball. The first half would end 0-0 with a shocked Spartan squad.
The second half would continue to go the way of the Wolves early on as the offense began to get hot, Centre Brad Engel would take the ball in for the Wolves first Try of the day, putting them on top of MSU 5-0. The excitiment would be short lived though as the Spartans would regroup with a furry and quickly pound their way down the field, punching in a Try of their own and adding the conversion to go up 7-5. Michigan - Dearborn would regain control of the game and push once more down the field. With just a few minute remaining in the game the Wolves would control the ball a mere 20 meters from the Spartan Tryline. Sensing a massive upset in the making, Dearborn would press just a little to hard combined with the desperation of the Spartans and would lose the ball on a fantastic interception by Michigan State. The Spartans would score a Try with no time remaining to finally silence the Wolves, 14-5.

April 5th, 2008 :: Ferris State University |
Detroit, MI - Michigan - Dearborn would take on Ferris State University in their second match up of the day looking to get into the win column. The Bulldogs would bring a different style game than the Wolves were used to seeing, using huge brusing forwards to try and wear down the tough Michigan - Dearborn defense. The first half would see the Wolves make a stupid mistake on their own try line, rushing to get the ball out of his own end Scrum-Half Stephen Piazza would fumble the ball and Ferris State would fall on it for the Try to go up 5-0. The vaunted Wolves defense would hold their ground until a freak play would allow Ferris State another try and put them up 10-0 at half time.
UMD would regroup at half time and come out hunting for their first win of the day. The Wolves would hold the ball and execute their offense nearly flawlessly to start the first half as Winger Ken Paylor would take the ball into the Try zone and Eightman Pat Khalaf would add the conversion to pull the Wolves within 3, 10-7. Ferris State would begin substituting their big Forwards out of the game due to exhaustion, and Michigan - Dearborn would press to take advantage of the tired Bulldogs again. The wind would end up being the biggest enemy of the match for the Wolves as there were multiple Line-Out opportunities but the wind would cause them to go astray. UMD would again press towards the end of the game to get the last second Try in order to pull off another upset and prove that they can both play with and beat the big boys of the State. But it would not happen on this day, as the pressing Wolves would again press too hard for the upset and allow the Bulldogs to push across their last Try of the game, defeating the Wolves 15-7. |

April 5th, 2008 :: Saginaw Valley State University |
Detroit, MI - The Wolves would end the day with what seemed to be an easy match against newcomer Saginaw Valley State University Cardinals. After playing at such a high level all day the Wolves would play at a much lower level and almost let the "easy" win of the day slip through their hands. The Cardinals would come out pressing against the Wolves in hopes of springing an upset of their own on the day. SVSU would strike first, scoring a Try off a penalty play from just 10 Meters, taking advantage of a confused Michigan - Dearborn defense. The Wolves would strike back though and hammer in a Try of their own with the conversion and take the lead 7-5 into half time.
The second half would see more sloppy play from both teams as the day dragged on. The upstart Cardinals would take advantage of a miss tackle on the outside and show off their speed as they would race into the Try zone with just under 2 minutes left. They would take the lead 10-7, but the Wolves would not be denied a win on this day after coming so close to victory twice earlier in the day. Michigan - Dearborn would force themselves apoun the Cardinals and force a Saginaw Valley turnover. Taking the ball the Wolves would capitalize on 3 consecutive penalties by Saginaw Valley and with just under 20 seconds left in the game, Flanker Ali Badoui would punch in his first UMD Try and David Kerr would knock over his second conversion of the day and the Wolves would take the victory from the claws of defeat, 14-10.
