Amnesty Speaks at Take Back the Night (October 4th 2007)

The Women's Resource Center at the University of Michigan-Dearborn hosted Take Back the Night, a rally and panel aimed at raising awareness of violence against women.

Umich-Dearborn student and member of Amnesty International-Dearborn Ash (Adil Ashraf) spoke about The Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW). The CEDAW was adopted in 1979 by the UN General Assembly and is often described as an international bill of rights for women. Consisting of a preamble and 30 articles, it defines what constitutes discrimination against women and sets up an agenda for national action to end such discrimination.

Currently, 185 countries - over ninety percent of the members of the United Nations - are party to the Convention. The Unites States is the only developed nation that has signed, but not ratified the treaty, therefore it is not bound to put the provisions of the Convention into practice.

Ash encouraged attendees to sign petitions asking state and national representatives to urge the United States to ratify the CEDAW. He also also spoke about the importance of redefining and expanding the traditional and narrowly defined male gender role.
