Current Undergraduate Student Scholarship Program

The scholarships in the Current Student Scholarship Program are made available through the generous gifts of private donors and alumni of UM-Dearborn.  In 2012-2013, the value of these scholarships ranged from $200 to $5,000.  Up to 10 scholarships may be selected for consideration on this single application.

EARLY BIRD $1,000 SCHOLARSHIP

Completed applications (student portion) received by 5:00 p.m. 12/19/12 will be considered for an Early Bird $1,000 Scholarship.  Recommendation letters are still due by 2/1/13.

 ELIGIBILITY

To be eligible, you must...

  • be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen,
  • be currently enrolled in a degree seeking program,
  • have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 (undergraduate) or minimum cumulative GPA of 6.0 (graduate), unless otherwise noted in the scholarship description,
  • have completed a minimum of 12 credit hours at (undergraduate) or 6 credit hours (graduate) at UM-Dearborn as of 01/01/2013 (classes below 100 level do not count toward the 12 credit hours),
  • not be graduating in May 2013
  • not be receiving a full-tuition scholarship for 2013-14,
  • be enrolled at least half-time at UM-Dearborn during the semester(s) for which the scholarship is used, unless otherwise noted in the scholarship description (scholarships may be pro-rated for less than full-time enrollment).

Notes

  1. All correspondence will be sent via email to your UM-Dearborn email account.
  2. If you are graduating at the end of Fall 2013, your scholarship award will be the value of one semester, not the entire scholarship award.
  3. Scholarships may affect your financial aid award.

Submission Process

  • Complete the application using the PDF application on your computer.  Remember to save it to your hard drive before submission.
  • Check the appropriate boxes for the scholarships for which you are applying.
  • Any attached documents must be in a .doc or .pdf format.
  • Submit the Release and Signature Form (application will not be considered without signature page).
  • Recommendation letters are required and can be submitted by the student or the recommender. Additional  details  about recommendation letters are contained within the application.

The Scholarships

Qualified undergraduate students can apply for the following scholarships using the UM-Dearborn Current Students Scholarship Program application:

ACADEMIC INTERNSHIP TUITION SCHOLARSHIP
The purpose of this award is to recognize academic achievements of UM-Dearborn students and to support, through tuition stipend, the participation in off-campus, non-paid academic internship experiences which enhance the students' educational and career objectives. This scholarship is intended to support those internship programs which are non-paid and which yield university credit. The scholarship funds awarded will be applied toward tuition costs for the internship course. Applicants must have achieved sophomore, junior, or senior standing and be enrolled in an internship for the term in which they are applying. This scholarship may be used for immediate upcoming summer, fall, or winter internships.

AFRICAN-AMERICAN ALUMNI AFFILIATE BOOK SCHOLARSHIP
The purpose of this scholarship is to recognize outstanding leadership achievement of African-American students enrolled at UM-Dearborn. Applicants must have a minimum cumulative 2.5 GPA.  Recipients will be selected based on academic achievement, demonstrated involvement and leadership abilities on campus or in the community, scholarly research, and artistic creations or inventions.

AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF UNIVERSITY WOMEN (AAUW) SCHOLARSHIP
The AAUW Scholarship provides incentive awards to women whose education has been interrupted and who are now enrolled in a degree-seeking program. Applicants must be women who have had at least a two-year interruption in their education and are at least 25 years of age.

BARNES AND NOBLE BOOK SCHOLARSHIP
The Barnes and Noble Book Scholarship is sponsored by the University of Michigan-Dearborn Barnes and Noble Bookstore. This program is intended to help defray the costs of college attendance by assisting students with the cost of books. Awards are drawn from individual book accounts established for the recipients at the UM-Dearborn Bookstore for the purpose of purchasing textbooks only.

JAMES BARTON SCHOLARSHIP FOR STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES                             This scholarship program was established to recognize, recruit and/or encourage continued progress of, and provide assistance to students with disabilities who study mathematics, natural sciences, computer science, or engineering.  Students must be eligible for Disability Resource Services and majoring in one of the mentioned programs of study.  Recipients will be selected on the basis of merit and need.

SELMA BAUMGARTEN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship has been established to help students in financial need who might otherwise not be able to complete their studies and who in some measure share the values held by Mrs. Baumgarten and her strong belief in the power of higher education to transform lives. She felt that all people should have the opportunity to improve themselves and their ability to help others through education. Applicants must demonstrate a love of learning and dedication to public service. Preference will be give to students majoring in or planning to major in fields within CASL or School of Education. Particular consideration will be given to participants in the SOAR program.

BETH BESON SCHOLARSHIP FOR RETURNING WOMEN
This fund was established to recognize scholastic achievement, to encourage continued progress, and to provide assistance to women in financing their education. The scholarship is intended to help women who have economic responsibility for themselves and their children and/or those women who are in need of additional education to gain economic independence.

JOHN J. BROWNFAIN ENDOWED MEMORIAL HONORS SCHOLARSHIP
This fund was established to recognize scholastic achievement, encourage continued progress, and provide assistance to students in financing their education at UM-Dearborn. Students must be enrolled in the Honors Program and a majoring in Humanities or Psychology. Students must be enrolled full-time.

DR. JOACHIM "KIM" BRUHN SCHOLARSHIP FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDY
This scholarship was established to recognize scholastic achievement, to encourage continued progress, and to provide opportunities for students to build on their classroom experience and learn about the world through study abroad. The award may only be used for a UM-Dearborn approved international study or study abroad program. Preference will be given to CASL students.  This scholarship may be used for immediate upcoming summer, fall, or winter programs.

CASL ALUMNI AFFILIATE SCHOLARSHIP
The scholarship program is sponsored by the Alumni Affiliate of the College of Arts, Sciences, and Letters (CASL). This program is intended to recognize the superior academic achievement of students enrolled in degree programs in CASL. Applicants must have achieved sophomore, junior, or senior standing, have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.25, and must to submit a recommendation from a CASL faculty member who is familiar with their academic ability.

CASL EMERITI FACULTY SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship was established by a group of College of Arts, Sciences and Letters (CASL) Emeriti faculty. This program is intended to recognize scholastic achievement, encourage continued academic progress, and  provide assistance to students in financing their education. Applicants must have been accepted for study in the College of Arts, Science and Letters and have achieved junior or senior status, with preference given to seniors who demonstrate qualities of leadership.

SHIRLEY DUDEK DEMMER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship was established to recognize, recruit and encourage the continued progress of, and provide assistance to UM-Dearborn undergraduate students in the Women’s & Gender Studies program and graduate students in the Master of Arts in Liberal Studies program who have selected Women’s & Gender Studies as their thematic focus. Merit and financial need will be considered in the selection process.

DR. JOHN DEMPSEY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
The scholarship was established in memory of Dr. Dempsey, a former professor of political science at UM-Dearborn who also served as Director of Budget for the State of Michigan and Director of the Michigan Department of Social Services. Applicants must have achieved junior or senior standing and be majoring in Political Science.

DR. JOHN DEVLIN SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship was established to recognize scholastic achievement, encourage continued progress of, and provide assistance to students who have declared, or intend to declare a major in Physics.  Recipients will be selected on the basis of financial need and merit.

DR. CAROLE A. FIELEK AND MR. ANTHONY C. FIELEK ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP
This endowed scholarship was established by alumni Dr. Carole A. Fielek and Mr. Anthony C. Fielek to encourage continued progress toward a degree in the School of Education (SOE).  Awards will be based on merit and need.

DR. LINDA FISHER MEMORIAL ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship was established to recognize, to encourage continued progress, and to provide assistance to students majoring in the natural sciences. The applicant must achieved junior or senior status, concentrating in one of the undergraduate degree programs in the Natural Sciences Department. Some preference will be given to those with a concentration in Microbiology.

ELNORA FORD AND CHERYL HARRIS INTELLECTUAL EXCELLENCE SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship was established to reward academic excellence.  To be considered for the award, students must submit an essay on a social justice topic (minimum of 5 pages and not to exceed 7 pages) by February 1.  Student must be U.S. citizens and Michigan residents, have a minimum GPA of 2.5, and have completed at least six undergraduate credit hours at UM-Dearborn.  Essays should accompany the UM-Dearborn scholarship applications and be submitted to the Office of Financial Aid.  Duplicate essays must be dropped off by the same date to: Office of African/African American Studies, Room 2040 CASL Building.

GARDEN CLUB OF DEARBORN
This scholarship program is funded through a generous gift made by the foundation of the Federal Garden Clubs of Michigan and the Garden Club of Dearborn. The purpose of the program is to perpetuate study in environmentally related fields. Applicants must be majoring in Horticulture, Environmental Science, or a related field. Academic standing, financial need, and character will be considered in awarding this scholarship.

GENERAL MERIT SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship is to reward superior academic achievement and to help students with the financial burden of attending college.  While merit will be the primary criterion, financial need will also be a factor in the selection process.

HELEN MATAYA GRAVES POLITICAL SCIENCE INTERNSHIP SCHOLARSHIP
The purpose of this award is to recognize academic achievements of UM-Dearborn students, and to support, through tuition stipend, the participation in off-campus, non-paid political internship experiences which enhance students' educational and career objectives. This scholarship is intended to support those internship programs which are non-paid and which yield university credit. The scholarship funds awarded will be applied toward tuition costs for the political internship course. Applicants must have achieved sophomore, junior, or senior standing and be enrolled in an political internship for the term in which he/she is applying.  This scholarship may be used for immediate upcoming summer, fall or winter internships.

JANET AND CYNTHIA HEWITT SCHOLARSHIP FOR WOMEN
The purpose of this scholarship is to assist non-traditional female students.  Applicants must be the sole support for their household. Applicants may have lost their major source of support and need to re-enter the job market to achieve economic independence.  Students should have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.6; be U.S. citizens and residents of Michigan. Preference will be given to previous year's recipient(s).

HOLLAND FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship was established the Holland family to encourage academic progress and to acknowledge a student's commitment to their own communities.  Recipients will be selected on the basis of scholastic achievement, demonstrated service to the community through ongoing charitable work, and financial need.  Political work will not be considered for the community service requirement.

INTERNATIONAL STUDIES TUITION SCHOLARSHIP
The purpose of this scholarship is to support those programs which provide an academic experience in a foreign country, in recognition of the unique intellectual, career, and personal growth opportunities that such a program can provide. The scholarship money awarded will be applied toward tuition costs for all UM-Dearborn sponsored programs. For students who are studying abroad in conjunction with a college or university other than UM-Dearborn, the scholarship money will be applied to tuition costs at UM-Dearborn for the academic term following the foreign study. Applicants must have achieved sophomore, junior or senior standing  and be enrolled in an approved international study program. Students in foreign language programs must provide a form verifying attendance at a foreign institution. The form must be signed by a faculty member.  This scholarship may be used for immediate upcoming summer,  fall, or winter internships.

WILLIAM AND ALICE JENKINS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
The scholarship is in honor of Dr. William Jenkins, second Chancellor of UM-Dearborn, and his wife, Mrs. Alice Jenkins. This scholarship is to reward superior academic achievement, and to help students with the financial burden of attending college. Therefore, while merit will be the primary criterion, financial need will also be a factor in the selection process. Applicants must have achieved junior or senior standing. Current recipients of a full tuition scholarship are not eligible for this award. Two scholarships are awarded annually, with one specifically earmarked for a qualified student belonging to one of the groups identified as enhancing the diversity of the student body.

GRACE AND EVELYN KACHATUROFF SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship was created by Grace and Evelyn Kachaturoff in honor of their parents and family who were and are committed to public education. Applicants must be enrolled in the elementary or secondary education program in the humanities or the social sciences, must demonstrate a strong commitment to K-12 public education, and be enrolled at least 8 credits per semester.  Applicants must have achieved junior, senior or graduate standing and will be selected on the basis of scholastic achievement, a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5 (or the graduate equivalent of), and qualities of demonstrated leadership skills.

LECTURERS EMPLOYEE ORGANIZATION SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship is sponsored by the Lecturers Employee Organization at the University of Michigan–Dearborn. Applicants must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.25. While merit will be the primary criterion, financial need will also be a factor in the selection process.

The scholarship was established in memory of James and May Bell Loeb to recognize outstanding scholastic achievement. Applicants must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5.  While merit will be the primary criterion, financial need will also be a factor in the selection process.

WANDA MACKI MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship was established to provide scholarship support to students enrolled in the College of Arts, Sciences and Letters (CASL) Student Outreach and Academic Resources (SOAR) Program.  Recipients will be selected on the basis of financial need and merit.

MARDIGIAN LIBRARY STUDENT ASSISTANT SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship was established to recognize the contributions made by student assistants to the success of the Mardigian Library.  Eligible students must have been student assistants for a minimum of two semesters providing public and technical services.  A letter of recommendation from a library staff member must be included with your application and can serve as your non-faculty recommendation.

KENNETH & MARIAN PARKHURST NATURAL AREAS FELLOWSHIP
This scholarship is designed to provide experiential learning for a prospective leader of natural history and environmental interpretation. The applicant must show leadership skills and initiative, as well as possess high quality communication and interpersonal skills. The applicant may be enrolled in any concentration or program,  but will be expected to take courses appropriate to the understanding of natural history, ecological processes of the Natural Areas,  and the development of interpretive and research skills. Applicant must demonstrate a strong interest in and commitment to a lifelong pursuit of knowledge and discovery about the natural world, communication of this knowledge, and values which provide for the preservation of natural areas and biodiversity.

PI OMICRON PHILANTROPHIC SORORITY SCHOLARSHIP IN MEMORY OF RUTH HEYMAN
This scholarship was established to recognize, recruit, and/or encourage the continued progress of, and provide assistance to junior and/or senior level students.  Preference will be given to students in the CASL SOAR Program.  Recipients will be selected on the basis of merit and need.  Students must be enrolled full-time.

POTTS ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP                                                              This scholarship was established to recognize, encourage continued progress and retention of, and provide assistance to students who have declared, or intend to declare, a major in Chemistry, Biochemistry, and/or Environmental Science.  While merit will be the primary criterion, financial need will also be a factor in the selection process.

RICHARD REYNOLDS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
The scholarship recognizes demonstrated achievement of UM-Dearborn students in the fields of journalism, public relations, advertising, and related areas of mass communications. Applicants must have achieved sophomore standing with at least 30 credit hours completed at UM-Dearborn and have demonstrated achievement in mass communications or related areas.

SOE STUDENT TEACHING SCHOLARSHIP
The School of Education (SOE) Student Teaching Scholarship is funded through the generosity of UM-Dearborn alumni, faculty, and friends to help alleviate the financial burden encountered by many students pursuing elementary or secondary certification during which they complete their required student teaching.  Applicants must be enrolled in the elementary or secondary education program; must be eligible to enroll in student teaching (EDD 435, EDD 421, EDD 518) during the next academic year; and must submit a current Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to the Office of Financial Aid.  Recipients will be selected on the basis of financial need, scholastic achievement, involvement in campus/community activities, and letters of recommendation.  A strong commitment to K-12 public education is also a factor in the selection process and must be addressed within the application.

SIDELL SLOSSBERG SORSCHER AND SAMUEL SORSCHER SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship was established to recognize scholastic achievement, to encourage continued progress and provide assistance to students in financing their education. This scholarship also assists those students whose support from parents, family or spouse is non-existent or marginal. Special consideration will be given to students with refugee status. Students must be enrolled full-time with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5.  While merit will be the primary criterion, financial need will also be a factor in the selection process.

STOKES-HOFFMAN SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship has been established to recognize, recruit and/or encourage the continued progress of, and provide assistance to students who are active in the UM-Dearborn Gay/Straight Alliance or another related organization and/or are interested in gender identity and/or sexual identity issues.  Preference will be given to students who also provide evidence of involvement in community affairs or interest in law and public policy, public administration, or related areas of study at UM-Dearborn.  While merit will be the primary criterion, financial need will also be a factor in the selection process.

VELDA D. TAYLOR SCHOLARSHIP FOR RETURNING WOMEN
This scholarship was established by Deborah Taylor in memory of her late mother. The purpose of the scholarship is to assist returning women students. Applicants must be women who have at least a two year interruption in their education, are at least 25 years of age, and are committed to full-time (12 credit hours or more) study. Applicants must have completed at least 55 hours. Preference will be given to students interested in a career in the fields of human/health/social services or an area of education.  Applicants must be willing to interview with the scholarship committee.

AL TURFE SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship was established to recognize, encourage continued progress and retention of, and provide assistance to students in the College of Arts, Science and Letters (CASL). While merit will be the primary criterion, financial need will also be a factor in the selection process.

AL TURFE MATHEMATICS SCHOLARSHIP                                                                            This scholarship was established to recognize, encourage continued and retention of, and provide assistance students who have declared, or intend to declare, a major in mathematics.  While merit will be the primary criterion, financial need will also be a factor in the selection process.

JUDGE THOMAS A. AND HELEN VAN TIEM SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship was established by Judge Thomas and Helen Van Tiem to ensure that Early Childhood Education receives the emphasis it should have in academia and in the community at large. The scholarship will be award to a student in the School of Education Early Childhood Education program. Students must be enrolled full-time.

SIDNEY WARSCHAUSKY FUND FOR LITERATURE, PHILOSOPHY, AND ARTS STUDENTS
This scholarship was established to recognize scholastic achievement, encourage continued progress of, and provide assistance to students who have declared, or intend to declare a major in a discipline in the Department of Literature, Philosophy & the Arts.  Recipients will be selected on the basis of financial need and merit.

RICHARD A. YOUNG PUBLIC SERVICE SCHOLARSHIP
The scholarship was established in honor of Representative Young's thirty years of service and leadership in the Michigan Legislature. The program recognizes outstanding upperclass students with a record of service to their community. Applicants must have achieved junior or senior standing and have demonstrated commitment to public service (for example, in campaigns or political, community, or religious organizations). Applicants will be required to submit a recommendation from a community leader with direct knowledge and experience of the applicant's community service. Awards may not be applied toward costs associated with participation in a Political Internship Program.

SAM ZEHRA SCHOLARSHIP IN HONOR OF SENATOR GEORGE J. MITCHELL
This scholarship was established in provide scholarship support to students who are residents of Dearborn, Michigan and are interested in a career in public service and diplomacy.  Preference will be given to students who are majoring, or intend to major, in the Public Communication and Cultural Studies program, International Studies, Political Science-Comparative Politics.  It is the Donor's wish that the recipients of such scholarships exemplify the commitment to public service and diplomacy shown by Senator George J. Mitchell and be guided by his shining example as they pursue their lifework.
