Household Hazardous Waste Disposal

Proper disposal of household waste is an important part in preventing contamination of surface and ground waters. Common household hazardous wastes, such as oil, oil-based paint, batteries, and antifreeze, should not be disposed with regular household trash that is landfilled. At the landfill, contaminants from household hazardous waste have potential to either seep into groundwater or to be carried off site by storm water runoff. Good waste handling practices, such as recycling, composting, and proper hazardous waste disposal, help protect our water resources and our environment.

To dispose of these household hazardous waste materials, check county websites (some listed on our recycling page) or your local newspaper to see when a county  near you is hosting a household hazardous waste collection day.
