A message from the Vice Chancellor of Enrollment Management and Student Life
Welcome to the University of Michigan–Dearborn community! And I use that last word deliberately. We think of our campus as a community where all of us have responsibility for our students’ academic success, whether we are teaching them in the classroom or working with them in the Student Activities Office or the Women’s Resource Center. Our students repeatedly tell us how important their interactions with faculty and staff are to them. The community we create is a major part of the excellence that distinguishes us from so many other places.
You are coming to the University of Michigan–Dearborn just as we begin to implement some exciting new initiatives. We are working hard across the campus to build a national model of academically based enrollment management and student engagement—inside and outside the classroom.
Part of this effort included the creation of the division of Enrollment Management & Student Life, or EMSL (em-sull), as we call it. In this unit are joined the offices that lead recruitment and retention services. However, this is not the traditional collection of student affairs offices that have no interaction with faculty. This is a group of services working to collaborate with academic units to improve student success. We are committed to streamlining services and finding ways to bring students out of the parking lots into genuine collegiate experiences. We want to test students’ talents in the classroom rather than test their patience in navigating the bureaucracy of the University.
EMSL’s vision is to offer a high-performing team that leads the way to seamless educational experiences for difference makers. I invite you to learn more about our Vision, Mission and Values by clicking here.
We will talk more in depth today about our University of Michigan–Dearborn approach to student success, but we also want you to know more about your EMSL colleagues and all of the services we provide. The materials on this Web site will give you tools that you can apply in helping students to engage and succeed here in our community.
Again, welcome! I know that you will strengthen our commitment to student success and thereby enrich our U of M–Dearborn family. Please know that I stand ready to help you in any way I can in your efforts. All of us in EMSL look forward to working with you.
Sincerely,
Stanley E. Henderson
Vice Chancellor
