Placement Exam Registration for Current and Transfer Students

Please register for the placement exam(s) you need below. Students are able to register for the English, Math and Foreign Language Placement Exams all at once, or only the specific exam needed. If you are unsure which exam(s) you need to take please read the description of each exam listed below. English Placement Exam
All incoming students must take the English Composition placement exam to fulfill the requirement for graduation. This exam places you in either Composition 105 or Composition 106 (or the additive non-credit course Composition 099). You are given two hours to write a response to a two-page selection from a published author. There is no correct response to the question. This exam can only be taken once.
Mathematics Placement Exam
Mathematics placement exam is required if you are an incoming freshman or a transfer student not transferring a Calculus I or higher equivalent course with an earned grade of a C or better. This computer-based test has no time limit (though most students typically end within two hours). Calculators are not allowed for this test. Unlike the English Composition exam, you can take the Mathematics placement exam up to 2 times. This exam helps place you into the appropriate Mathematics level. It will take approximately 2-3 weeks to receive your Mathematics examination results.
Foreign Language Placement Exam
Placement examinations in the languages of Arabic, German, French and Spanish are offered. Results of these examinations are generally available within 3-4 weeks. For more information about this examination, visit the website at: http://www.umd.umich.edu/plex/
