The First Annual Run/Walk for a Cause was held Friday, June 1, 2007 from 11-2 pm on the grounds of the UM-Dearborn campus. This event, this year benefiting the University of Michigan-Dearborn Child Development Center's Building Fund raised more than $2,600. Nearly 60 adults and 20 children turned out to run or walk the campus route. In addition, representatives from Oakwood Hospital administered blood pressure and glucose screenings, the emergency medical technicians on hand for the event provided tours of their ambulance, and a variety of children's activities were hosted by the Child Development Center.
According to Monica Porter, WRC Director, each year the Women's Resource Center receives several requests for individual funding in addition to many local, state and national issues that challenge women. Because of limited funding, many requests go unanswered. As a result on June 1, 2007, the Women's Resource Center co-sponsored the First Annual Run/Walk for a Cause at the University of Michigan-Dearborn. Each year, a cause will be identified and all of the proceeds will be donated to a local, state or national agency. The Child Development Center (CDC) was selected as the first recipient. The CDC is located on campus in the three stone cottages of the historic Henry Ford Estate. The University of Michigan-Dearborn CDC Program is designed to educate the whole child physically, intellectually, emotionally, socially, linguistically and aesthetically. It is based upon the research of leading psychologists and educators such as Piaget, Erikson and Vygotsky. The program addresses the needs of the developing child and provides many educational opportunities. These opportunities stimulate children as they learn at their own rate and pace and construct their own knowledge, think critically, solve problems and make decisions. The CDC enrolls children from aged one year and walking independently through age six and one-half. Each term approximately 135 children are enrolled at the Center, most on a part-time basis.
"A great time was had by all at the First Annual Run/Walk for a Cause," according to Shareia Carter, program coordinator for the Women's Resource Center. "We look forward to a bigger and better event next year."
