Graduate English Language Proficiency

If you are not a native speaker of English, you must prove an adequate level of English language proficiency, even if you are currently a U.S. citizen or permanent resident and regardless of how long you have resided or been educated in the U.S.

UM-Dearborn does not offer beginning or intermediate-level English language study, and we do not offer conditional or probationary admission. You must fulfill the English language proficiency requirement in one of the ways described below before admission will be granted.

Graduate School English Proficiency Requirements

College of Engineering and Computer Science
School of Education
College of Business

College of Arts, Sciences, and Letters

  • Applicants who have earned or will earn a Bachelor or Master degree from an institution where the language of instruction is English, exclusively, are exempt from submitting an Official English Proficiency Score. Verification from the school may be required.
  • Applicants who have earned or will earn a Bachelor of Master degree from a country where the official language is English, (United States of America, Australia, England) are exempt from submitting an Official English Proficiency Score.

If you have not met the conditions described above, you will be required to complete an English proficiency test. Proficiency tests that are accepted are: the Examination for the Certificate of Proficiency in English (ECPE), the International English Languages Testing System (IELTS), the Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB), and the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). You must take one of these tests; it is not necessary to take all of them.

Testing Information

Both the TOEFL and the MELAB are offered throughout the world. You should take one or the other well in advance of your intended starting term. TOEFL scores arrive at UM-Dearborn 6-8 weeks after the test date. MELAB scores are available within a week if the test is taken in Ann Arbor, but if taken abroad, testing and mailing delays may prolong the process. If you are living in southeastern Michigan, we suggest you take the MELAB on the Ann Arbor campus so that we can receive the scores quickly. The APIEL Exam is only offered overseas to high school students.

You may take the MELAB or TOEFL test more than once, and only your most recent score will be considered. Test scores more than two years old will not be accepted for consideration.
