COMP 105: Community-based Writing, Prof. Bill DeGenaro
This course provides a workshop environment where students may develop proficiency in writing for a variety of purposes and audiences. This course emphasizes critical analysis and assumes that effective writing results from a process of thinking, planning, pre-writing, discovering new ideas, composing, revising, and editing. This course involves creating collaboratively written field reports for various community organizations.
EDC 442/542: Family/School/Community Collaboration in a Multicultural Society, Prof. Katie Silverman
The course allows students to apply theoretical constructs around academic service learning to community relationship building, partnerships and advocacy. Students were given the opportunity for first hand experience and to gain confidence in learning how to work with community programs and forge partnerships
EXPS 283: Geography and Economics in Elementary Schools, Prof. Karen Thomas-Brown
This course is a survey of the geography and economics taught in grades K-6. Particular attention will be paid to the geography of Michigan and the Great Lakes region. Market and other types of economics will be examined in the light of core economic principles.
SOC 435: Urban Sociology, Prof. Paul Draus
The study of social life in urban areas has been central to the field of sociology since its inception in the late 19th century. As we study the history of urban sociology and become familiar with its major theories, concepts, and debates, we will also be actively participating in various dimensions of social life in this major urban region of Metro Detroit. Community service is required.
SOC 497: Senior Research Seminar, Prof. Pam Aronson
This capstone course will focus on qualitative research methods for Sociology majors. Students in this class will engage in a research project to learn more about the culture of UM Dearborn.
