PROVOST AND VICE CHANCELLOR FOR ACADEMIC AFFAIRS
The University of Michigan-Dearborn invites nominations and applications for the position of Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. Located 20 minutes from downtown Detroit and one of the three campuses of the University of Michigan, UM-Dearborn is among the top- tier comprehensive public universities in the Midwest with 8,600 students and an outstanding faculty. Poised for a dynamic future as an outstanding metropolitan university, UM-Dearborn seeks an experienced, creative and energetic individual to play a key leadership role as Provost and to further strengthen its academic mission, programs, and services for the greater benefit of its students, faculty, communities, and region.
Background and Position: Established in 1959 with a gift from the Ford Motor Company, UM- Dearborn has grown and developed into a comprehensive university offering 70 undergraduate and 27 master’s degrees in the liberal arts and sciences, engineering and computer science, management, education and public administration. About half of the undergraduate students enter directly from high school on a selective basis and the remainder have prior college experience. UM-Dearborn is comprised of an ethnically, culturally and religiously diverse student population, 20% of which are students of color. One-fifth of all students are enrolled in graduate programs. The campus community is comprised of approximately 280 full-time and 230 part-time faculty and 475 administrative staff. Operating budgets total approximately $115 million.
UM-Dearborn envisions its future as a nationally recognized, outstanding metropolitan university. As the chief academic officer, the Provost has primary responsibility to plan, develop, and administer all aspects of the University’s academic programs, activities, and budget; provide leadership in maintaining academic standards; foster and support research; and represent the University with appropriate external agencies and organizations. The Provost is responsible for development and oversight of all graduate programs and enrollment. Reporting directly to the Chancellor, the Provost supervises the deans of the four academic units, the Directors of the Library, Information Technology Services, Office of Research and Sponsored Programs, and related offices.
Qualifications: The ideal candidate will be both academically and administratively experienced and talented, and a person of the highest integrity. The new Provost will be a leader who works collaboratively with the entire UM-Dearborn community to implement the vision for the University’s future. Preferred candidates will: have a record of exemplary teaching, distinguished scholarship, and administrative accomplishments; be experienced in fiscal and personnel management; possess strong organizational and interpersonal skills, including those in communication and problem-solving; be committed to affirmative action, equal opportunity, and diversity; demonstrate an interest in working effectively and collaboratively in a shared governance culture; be a forceful advocate for the institution, its faculty and academic programs; and have an earned doctorate and be tenurable at the rank of full professor.
