Chancellor's Message to the Campus

August 16, 2008

Dear Colleagues,

The process of identifying, selecting and recruiting our next provost is a great opportunity for us to reflect on the values that bring us together as an institution and the goals we share for our future. In the past several weeks, I have consulted widely with faculty and staff in identifying members of our university community who can best conduct this important search. I am pleased to be able to report that we have assembled a committee that has the breadth of knowledge, experience and judgment to lead a highly successful search.

I am most grateful that Marilee Benore Parsons, professor of biology and biochemistry, has agreed to chair the committee.

Other members are:

  • Marilee Benore Parsons, Professor of Biology and Biochemistry (Chair)
  • Sidney Bolkosky, Professor of History
  • Gloria House, Professor of Humanities and Director of the Program in African and African American Studies
  • Yi Lu Murphey, Professor and Chair of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering
  • Ghassan Kridli, Associate Professor in CECS
  • Kim Schatzel, Professor and Dean of the College of Business
  • Crystal Scott, Assistant Professor in the College of Business
  • Kim Killu, Associate Professor in the School of Education
  • Stanley Henderson, Vice Chancellor for Enrollment Management and Student Life
  • Robert Gassel, Associate Vice Chancellor and Director of Financial, Budget and General services
  • Judy Tatum, Director of Financial Aid
  • Lauren Reed, Student in CASL
  • Beth Ardisana, CECS Alumna and CEO of ASG Renaissance

We have contracted with Judith Auerbach and Associates to serve as the consultants for this search. Judith and her colleagues have done a great deal of academic placement work, both within the University of Michigan and nationally, and I have great confidence in her ability to help us assemble a diverse pool of academically and administratively talented candidates.

The committee will be asked to organize a search process that permits review of finalists in the winter semester, with an appointment to begin on July 1, 2009. The committee will be soliciting your advice and suggestions at various stages during this process.

We have much to accomplish here, and it is crucial that we continue moving forward on the important initiatives that are under way across campus during this period of transition. I extend my thanks to the members of the Dearborn community who have agreed to serve on this committee, and to all the members of the community who have offered me counsel as we begin this important search.
