Why did you choose to go into education?
As a young child I knew I wanted to become teacher. As a six year old child, I used to pretend to be a teacher with my siblings. I was the teacher and they were the students. I remember the pleasure I felt when they learned something new. I still feel that pleasure today when I am working with children. As I see their learning and understanding, I am proud to know I am the one who taught them this new information.
I believe the foundation for learning should be set earlier in a child’s life. Children need to find learning fun and see themselves as lifelong learners. I encourage this by having the children see me as a lover of learning. This can be done through hands on activities, participating in activities together, and co- researching information and facilitating rich discussions.
What do you hope to do once you graduate?
To get a job and start working on my Masters degree.
Why did you choose to attend UM-Dearborn?
The school was recommended to me by my children’s principle, Sr. Jan. She told me if I graduated from UM-Dearborn I could take a paper bag and teach everything important to a child. I researched the school and liked the small class size and the philosophy of the program.
What would you say was the most beneficial thing you have learned while being at the ECEC?
How smart children really are, you just need to listen to them. They have great ideas and those ideas are great teachable moments.
What is your favorite aspect of the ECEC?
My favorite aspect is the fact we are a lab school. Every lab student teaches me something new about children and how to help them grow in their knowledge.
What are some of your interests?
I enjoy is reading with my book club friends. They are great source of fun and insight. I enjoy going on adventures with my husband. We love to hop in the car and follow the road and find all kinds of new and interesting people and places.
