Terminology
Academic Advisor | The advisor serves as a resource for all academic and non-academic services and can help students plan their schedule, choose a major and understand the system . |
Academic Calendar | The Academic Calendar or Year consists of 16 week fall semester, 16 week winter semester, and two summer semesters. |
Alumus/Alumna/Alumni | A male (alumnus), or female (alumna) graduate or former student of the University of Michigan-Dearborn. The term alumni is for more than one alumnus or alumna. |
Bachelor's Degree | Formal name for a 4 year degree. |
Chancellor | The Chief Executive Office for the University of Michigan-Deaborn. Chancellor Daniel Little is in the middle of his 2nd term. |
Commencement | Ceremony where degree's are awarded. Also referred to as Graduation Ceremony |
Convocation | Ceremony that welcomes all new students to the University of Michigan-Dearborn |
Cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) | The average grade of all courses taken. |
Curriculum | All courses required for a degree |
Dean | College administrator responsible for a specific school or college. |
Drop | Officially withdraw from a course |
Extracurricular | Activites outside of a student's classes and course requirements. |
Finals/Final Exams | Exams given at the end of each semester. These may be comprehensive and include all material from the course or they may be more specific exams. |

Grades | Rating for your performance in your courses |
Syllabus | A course outline which usually explains course requirements, attendance policy, assignments, readings, examination schedule, faculty office location and hours and other important informaion |
Transcript | The official record of a student's college work, maintained by the Registrar. |
Tuition | The amount of money a student pays to for their courses. |
Withdrawal | Another term for dropping a class. |
