Faculty Senate Boards and Standing Committees
The Faculty Senate is responsible for staffing the boards, committees and task forces identified on the following pages. The Faculty Senate is always in need of faculty volunteers for service on the committees and task forces. (Please note that Faculty Senate Boards are staffed by Senate members only.) If you are interested in a particular committee or task force, please contact the Faculty Senate Office.
Student Affairs Advisory Committee
Advise the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and the Faculty Senate on standards and procedures for admission and registration of students; financial aid; counseling and academic support; and other aspects of student life that relate to the educational process.
Business and Facilities Advisory Committee
Advise the chief business officer and the Faculty Senate on new and revised business operations, programs and the development, utilization and maintenance of facilities.
Committee for the Economic Status of the Faculty
The committee shall concern itself with budgetary matters as they pertain to the economic status of the faculty or otherwise affect its ability of the faculty to fulfill its responsibilities. The committee shall work with the Faculty Senate and/or Faculty Senate Council to ensure that the Chancellor's University Budget Committee is aware of faculty needs and concerns. The committee shall present an Annual Report to the Faculty Senate for consideration.
Diversity Enhancement Committee
Initially, this newly established committee would function with the help and advice of three subcommittees (which will deal with issues affecting students, staff and faculty members). Once the diversity enhancement plan has been studied, revised as necessary, and specific plans proposed and adopted, the subcommittee structure will be eliminated and the DEC will operate in an advisory capacity to the Affirmative Action Coordinator, the University Administration and the Faculty and Staff Senates.
Enrollment Advisory Council
Ensure optimal student enrollment through effective marketing and student retention. Membership is permanent except for a Faculty Senate liaison, and faculty and student representatives.
Information Technology Advisory Committee
1) Advise the Executive Director for Information Technology Services and Chief Information Officer on campus computational needs and on direction, strategy, and policy for providing the campus community with access to information technology services, and 2) inform the Faculty Senate on issues pertaining to information technology services and to respond to requests from the Senate. The committee has one ex-officio member, six faculty or staff members appointed by the Senate.
Library and Media Services Advisory Committee
1) Advise the Director of the Library on library issues, including direction, strategy, and policy for providing the campus community with access to library and media services, and 2) inform the Faculty Senate on issues pertaining to library and media services and to respond to requests from the Senate.” The committee has one ex-officio member, six faculty or staff members appointed by the Senate.
Promotion and Tenure Committee
The Faculty Senate will form an eleven-person Promotion and Tenure Committee by reconstituting itself as a Select Committee of members representing all the academic units. Senators who are Professors and Associate Professors will consider Assistant Professor promotions; Senators who are Professors will consider Associate Professor promotions. Seats that cannot be filled from within the Senate membership will be filled by a random draw of eligible faculty from the affected unit. The Vice Chair of the Senate will serve as the chair of this Committee, and will not vote.
Research Support Committee
Evaluate faculty proposals for research support, to allocate funds, to act as a screening committee for sponsored research proposals and to act as a policy advisory group with respect to campus research issues for the Director of Sponsored Research and for the Faculty Senate.
Scholarship Committee
Work with the Financial Aid staff to monitor and distribute scholarship funds to UM-Dearborn students, and to advise the Financial Aid director and the Faculty Senate on policy matters regarding scholarships.
Student Media Committee
Act in an advisory capacity to the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs on any matters pertaining to the operation of the student media.
Undergraduate Curriculum and Degree Committee
There shall be an ad-hoc committee to advise the Provost on proposed curriculum and degree programs and at the request of a department, unit, or the Provost, to report to the Senate on other curriculum and degree matters. The ad-hoc committee shall be composed of one member identified by each of the unit curriculum committees, one Senate representative, and one designated chair. The ad-hoc committee shall be assembled upon notice from the Provost to the Senate that an undergraduate degree proposal has been submitted for review. Revised November 10, 2003
University Budget Committee
Provide an effective channel through which all campus constituencies can have significant and valuable input into the budget process, can receive timely information about the process, and can provide advice, analysis, and assessment throughout the process. The committee includes six faculty members, three staff members and three students, in addition to the provost and the vice chancellor for business affairs, and will meet with the chancellor and other senior officers and deans as appropriate. It is expected that meetings will take place once or twice a month through the academic year. Five of the faculty members of the University Budget Committee are designated through appointment by the Faculty Senate Council, with two members from the College of Arts, Sciences & Letters and one each from the School of Education, the School of Management and the College of Engineering & Computer Science.
