2010 Opportunity Scholars

Meet the Class of 2010 Opportunity Scholars. These twelve incoming freshmen distinguished themselves and have been selected to receive this prestigious full-tuition scholarship, valued at more than $39,000 over four years. They were selected from nearly 200 eligible, incoming students on the basis of academics, service to their community and a group interview. Learn more about them through the profiles below.

Jamilah Alhashidi

Ashraf Bakth

Jamilah graduated from Universal Academy.  While in high school, she was an active member of the National Honor Society.  Outside the classroom, Jamilah volunteered with the Arab American Anti-Discrimination Committee and the Childrenís Hospital of Michigan.

Ashraf graduated from Hamtramck High School.  While in high school, he participated in Student Council.  Ashraf was involved in the renovation of his community mosque, Al-Islah Islamic Masjid. Also, he participated in teaching the Muslim religion at Noor Masjid.

Ariel Bogan

Malia Gaddy

Ariel is a graduate of Crockett Vocational Technical High School.  Ariel participates in University Math Corps as a Lead Teaching Assistant.  She has also volunteered with Habitat for Humanity.

Malia is a graduate of University Prep Academy.  While in high school, she participated as a student ambassador, helping incoming freshmen acclimate and get involved.  Out of the classroom, she volunteered as a teacher for vacation bible school at her church and interned as a teacherís aid at Mt. Zion Head Start.

Bria is a graduate of Cass Technical High School.  Her volunteer services include leading group activities at the Boys and Girls Club and involvement with the Ronald McDonald House Charities.  While in high school, she was a member of the National Honor Society.

Nadia is a graduate of Universal Academy.  Outside the classroom, Nadia has been involved in coordinating the Dearborn Special Olympics, and organizing Howe Schoolís Special Needs Prom.  Nadia was also a member of the National Honor Society.

Elizabeth Morales

Jazmine, a Cass Technical High School graduate, has participated in the following volunteer efforts: Gleaners Food Collection, fundraising for the Make a Wish Foundation, and peer tutoring for students in math.

Elizabeth is a graduate of Cesar Chavez Academy.  She enjoys being a voice for the youth and her community by playing an active role in the Congress of Communities. Elizabeth has volunteered at the Detroit Mexican Consulate and at Latin Americans for Social and Economic Development. She has also tutored and mentored girls at Our Lady of Guadalupe Middle School in Detroit.

Heather Simpson

Fareed graduated from Cass Technical High School.  He was an active member of the National Honor Society serving as Secretary of Community Service.  Outside the classroom, Fareed volunteered serving lunches to the senior citizens at St. Patrick Senior Center and also tutored at the Boys and Girls Club of Southeastern Michigan.

Heather graduated from Cass Technical High School.  While in school, Heather was elected Vice President of the student council.  She was also involved in the Cass Tech Symphony Orchestra.  Outside the classroom, she mentors younger children in the area of performing arts.

Mamun Roshid

Roger Burney

Mamun, a graduate of Hamtramck High School, has participated in the following volunteer activities: the Hamtramck Public Library Summer Reading Program for youth and the Hamtramck City-Wide Cleanup. He also volunteered during the summer with U.S. Fashion on how to manage a small business in his community.

Roger graduated from Renaissance High School.  He was an active member of the National Honor Society, and was on the Robotics team.  Roger has volunteered with the City of Detroit Department of Elections and in his local church, Hampton Memorial Missionary Baptist Church.
