Meet the Class of 2009 Opportunity Scholars. These twelve incoming freshmen distinguished themselves and have been selected to receive this prestigious full-tuition scholarship, valued at more than $34,000 over four years. They were selected from nearly 200 eligible, incoming students on the basis of academics, service to their community and a group interview. Learn more about them through the profiles below.

Dulal graduated from Hamtramck High School.  While in school, he was an active member of the National Honor Society.  Outside the classroom, Dulal has participated in his local mosque and tutored students in night school.

Mifta graduated from Hamtramck High School.  While in school, he participated in an international-student-led organization which allowed him to connect with his community and provide service.  Mifta was involved in the Hamtramck City Clean-Up and is a member of the National Honor Society.

Nicoelle Baker

Nicoelle is a graduate of Cass Technical High School.  While in school, she participates in D.E.C.A, a marketing organization that gives students a chance to experience different aspects of business.  Out of the classroom, she is a teacher for vacation bible school at her church.

Michele is a graduate of River Rouge High School.  She was valedictorian of her class.   While in school, she was a member of Students Against Destructive Decisions (S.A.D.D) and of the National Honor Society.

Fatima is a graduate of Universal Academy.  Her volunteer services include assisting the homeless at Capuchin Soup Kitchen and involvement with the Arab American Anti-Discrimination Committee.  While in school, she was a member of the National Honor Society.

Ryinta is a graduate of Cass Technical High School. Outside the classroom, Ryinta has been involved in tutoring young adults who are preparing to take their G.E.D.  She is also very active in her church, St. Paul AME & Community.  Ryinta was also a member of the National Honor Society.

Eduardo Paredes

Sabaa, a Universal Academy graduate.  She participated in the following volunteer services: packing dinners for the homeless at the Capuchin Soup Kitchen, Martin L. King Jr. Service Day, and Pennies for Patients.

Eduardo is a graduate of Cass Technical High School.  He enjoys being a voice for the youth in his active role in the Youth Advisory Committee for the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan.  Eduardo is the second person in his family to receive the Opportunity Scholarship.

Rogelio Ramos

Anthony Russell

Rogelio graduated from Western International High School.  He has volunteered his time at Vistas Nuevas Head Start working with the children on their literacy skills.  Rogelio is an active member of his community in Southwest Detroit.

Anthony graduated from John J. Pershing High School.  He participated in Horizons Upward Bound, a college preparatory program, which allowed him to narrow his college search.  Anthony was also a member of the National Honor Society.

Jenna graduated from Cass Technical High School.  Some of her volunteer efforts include participating at the Woodhaven Retirement Community Center and being involved with the University of Michigan youth Policy Leaders.

Tyler is a home schooled graduate.  Some of his volunteer work includes participating in City Missions, tutoring elementary students during the week and assisting the elderly by providing services such as lawn care.
