Meet the inaugural Class of 2007 Opportunity Scholars. These twelve incoming freshmen distinguished themselves academically and have been selected to receive this prestigious full-tuition scholarship, valued at more than $30,000 over four years. They were selected from nearly 200 eligible, incoming students on the basis of academics, service to their community and a group interview. Learn more about them through the profiles below.

A graduate from Western International High School, Migladys is an active volunteer, helping children ages 4-12 at La Casa De Mi Padre (My Fathers House), passing out coffee and donuts to the homeless and recording and tagging trees in Clark Park located in Southwest Detroit.

Amy graduated from Cass Technical High School and her volunteer efforts include tutoring English at the Holy Redeemer Catholic Church and serving as President of the National Honor Society.

Trinita graduated from Mumford High School. She was the President of the National Honor Society, a member of the Young Women Teens and a member of the Business Professionals of America.

Charles graduated from the Winans Academy of Performing Arts. His volunteer works include assisting teachers with classroom preparation at the William Davison Elementary School and helping to distribute food during the Thanksgiving Holiday at the Perfecting Church Community Care Center.

Michelle is a graduate from Caesar Chavez High School. Some of her volunteer efforts include mentoring at Caesar Chavez Middle School for sixth graders in the SMARTS Mentoring Program.

Rehena is a graduate of Hamtramck High School. Rehena's volunteer works include decorating a Senior Citizen complex with classmates, helping to pack children’s snack bags for Winter Glow and helping with a community Blood Drive.

A graduate from Northern High School, Delwar was a member of his school's National Honor Society and has helped to volunteer by delivering food to the elderly and helping out at parent teacher conferences.

Samantha is a graduate from the Academy of Inkster High School. She has volunteered with the Wings of Love Church assisting in the Youth Ministry Christmas Gift Drive. She also assisted her local NAACP office in bringing awareness to the benefits of Affirmative Action.

Mindy is a graduate of Chadsey High School. Her volunteer efforts included working with the Harlem Children’s Society program where she developed a Power Point presentation for dialysis patients in the Nephrology department at Henry Ford Hospital.

Brittany is a graduate from the Winan’s Academy of Performing Arts. Her volunteer works include dancing with the Winan’s Academy Dance Company at a children’s concert and raising money with her school's National Honor Society to donate to various homeless shelters.

Brittany is a graduate of Mumford High School. Her volunteer activities include serving as an usher and singing in the choir at Second Chapel Hill Baptist Church and helping to pass out baskets to the needy on Christmas and Thanksgiving.

Julian is a graduate from Henry Ford High School. Some of his volunteer work includes the Mayor’s “Pick Up…Clean Up” and passing out blankets and quilts to the homeless with Sacred Heart Church.
